Francis Robert Schell was a wealthy Northfield Massachusetts Summer resident in the early 20th Century. Shortly after 1900, he built two big projects. One was the “Schell Bridge”, spanning the Connecticut River, and the other was his Summer home that became to be known as the “Northfield Chateau”. This brief view of the castle proves that his home was just as gaudy and wonderful as his “Schell Bridge”. Both the bridge and his 99 room Summer home were built by 1905. The chateau was too expensive to keep and was demolished in 1963.
